Melbourne Radiology Clinic specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of sporting and musculoskeletal injuries that may result in pain in and around the hip.

Hip Pain Injections

The team at Melbourne Radiology Clinic are specialists in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain of the hip joint. Before commencing with any hip pain injections, we offer a broad range of tests to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Once a diagnosis has been finalised and the clinical decision has been made to proceed to injection, we use our modern imaging equipment to accurately guide a needle to deliver appropriate pain-relieving medication directly into the region where the pain is emanating from.

Hip injections for pain relief are one of our most requested services and are delivered by a team of fellowship trained musculoskeletal and MRI specialist radiologists at our clinic in East Melbourne. The injections provide welcome relief from both acute and chronic pain for patients struggling with hip injuries or conditions who have not responded adequately to prescribed periods of rest, medication and rehabilitation. They also prove beneficial for patients wishing to have their pain alleviated prior to waiting for ultimate surgical treatment.

Why You May Need an Injection for Hip Pain, Wrist Pain or Elbow Pain

There are many reasons why patients may need pain injections to ease pain in hips, wrists and elbows. Often, pain hasn’t responded well to rest and rehabilitation and therefore requires a more direct approach. We are specialists in treating a broad range of musculoskeletal pain syndromes, including bursitis of the knee, hip and buttocks and routinely deliver pain injections for the subacromial (shoulder), iliopsoas (anterior hip) ischial (buttock) and infrapatellar (knee) bursae.

We deliver all our cortisone injections for elbow and wrist pain using ultrasound to guide us, thus ensuring precise delivery of the medication to the area where it is needed.

A Proven Treatment for Bursitis and Tenosynovium

Bursitis occurs due to wear and tear from excessive use or ageing. Most cases respond positively to rehabilitation and medication together with restriction or cessation of the activity that initially caused the symptoms. However, if symptoms persist, a cortisone injection directly into the bursa can help to reduce or eliminate the pain.

Many people suffer from painful wrists, often caused by repetitive movements which result in increased friction between the wrist tendons. The tendon sheath becomes inflamed by the repetitive movement, ultimately producing excess fluid. While this condition (tenosynovitis) can occur in any tendon of the body, in the wrist it is known as de Quervain’s tenosynovitis. This form of tenosynovitis can be successfully treated with an injection for wrist pain at our clinic.

Injection Options for Hip Pain

For hip pain and related musculoskeletal injuries, the regenerative treatment options available at Melbourne Radiology Clinic are as follows: Autologous Blood injection (ABI), Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection, sclerosant injection, and Autologous Tenocyte Implantation & Autologous Tenocyte Therapy (ATI/ATT).

ABI and PRP injections are often used to treat hip osteoarthritis. Other conditions that they can treat include bursitis, tendinitis, bone injuries, and torn ligaments. ATI/ATT and sclerotherapy can help relieve and treat hip pain that arises from gluteal tendinopathy and other tendon disorders.

A cortisone injection is also another pain relief option recommended for patients who experience bursitis or related inflammation, arthritis, injury, or stress in the hip.
