During an MRI scan, a large magnet is used to align the water molecules in the body. The MRI scanner then releases non-harmful radiofrequency (energy) waves to manipulate how the water molecules are aligned. When the waves are switched off, the water molecules release the energy imparted to them.  This released energy is detected by a coil as a signal, which is then digitised and processed to form an image that is analysed to assess a diagnosis.

Our independent radiology clinic specialises in offering most MRI scans in Olympic Park, including MRI scans. We utilise the best in MRI scanning technologies, conducting scans using a Siemens Espree bore unit which has 16% more space than the standard MRI scan unit.

MRI scans can prove effective for diagnosis of sporting injuries, soft tissue injuries and conditions and many other conditions.

What To Expect During Your MRI Scan

When you arrive for your appointment, you will be asked to change into a disposable gown and remove any metallic devices. You will then be asked to lie down on the MRI scan table and lie throughout the scanning process in order to obtain the best image quality. Most scans will take approximately 20 to 40 minutes to complete. All you need to do is lie still as the scan is being performed. We will provide you with noise cancelling headphones so you can distract yourself from the process, as well as music being played through these headphones. Our radiographer will keep you informed throughout the scanning process as to the progress of the scan as well as to keep in communication with yourself to ensure that you are comfortable.

After your scan, one of our expert radiologists will review the images and provide a formal written report with the diagnosis/diagnoses to your doctor. This report will be delivered within 24 hours or instantly, if requested by your referring health care provider.
