Referral Information for Podiatrists.
Melbourne Radiology Clinic can assist Podiatrists with the diagnosis and management of all their patient’s foot and ankle injuries.

Podiatrists may request foot and ankle X-ray and ultrasound scans that attract a Medicare rebate for their patients, as outlined in the latest MBS schedule.

Podiatrists may request diagnostic scans for their patients, however only certain scans will be eligible for a limited Medicare Rebate.
Diagnostic Scans.
For referrals from Podiatrists only, the following specific diagnostic imaging examinations are eligible for a limited Medicare Rebate.
Digital X-Ray

(Limited Medicare Rebate)

  • Foot, Ankle, Leg, Knee, Femur (1 region)
  • Foot, Ankle, Leg, Knee, Femur (2 regions)
Ultrasound

(Limited Medicare Rebate)

  • Midfoot or Hindfoot
  • Ankle or Hindfoot
  • Assessment of a mass associated with the skin or subcutaneous structures
MRI

(NO Medicare Rebate)

MRI scans of the foot and ankle do not attract a Medicare rebate irrespective of whether the referrer is a medical practitioner or not.

Other modalities

(NO Medicare Rebate)

Other modalities (such as diagnostic CT and imaging guided procedures performed under CT or ultrasound guidance) currently do not attract a Medicare rebate if referred by a podiatrist, however are Medicare eligible if referred by a medical practitioner.

Interventional Radiology
& Pain Management.
Melbourne Radiology Clinic offers a range of Interventional Radiology procedures performed using ultrasound or CT imaging guidance.

Podiatrists can refer patients for PRP / ABI injections as these are non-Medicare rebateable items and a referral from a medical practitioner is not required.

Ultrasound Guided Injections

Commonly used to treat arthritis, synovitis, capsulitis, plantar plate tears, bursitis, Morton’s neuroma, tendinosis, tenosynovitis and plantar fasciosis/fasciitis.

Image Guided Injections
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

RFA is predominantly used to treat Morton’s neuroma and recalcitrant plantar fasciosis/fasciitis.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Platelet Rich Plasma / Autologous Blood Injections

PRP / ABI injections can be used to treat tendonopathy, plantar fasciosis, arthritis and ligament sprains.
